New York based bassist Scott Colley:

"Stephanie Wagner and Norbert Dömling created a beautiful recording, ‘Traces’.
The compositions show the immense range of textures possible with flute and bass. And the performance by both musicians, of the written material and improvisations, are filled with surprises and great harmonic and rhythmic integrity.
Scott Colley, June, 2023”

The New York City Jazz Record

On the List of the recommended new CDs (July):

"Traces is straight-ahead, swinging modern jazz. The sparseness of the duo instrumentation is belied by how rich the music making is. Wagner in particular spins out a constant flow of ideas. She’s an exciting jazz player and a tremendous flutist; her sound is even and full through all registers, and her alto and bass flute playing have the same focused sound as the C-flute. The writing is also excellent, from the opening “Salsa Torcida” to the noirish ballad “State of Suspense”

"They conjure up extraordinarily beautiful colors and moods with unusual instrumentation...

You don't miss anything when flute and double bass interact so virtuosically and musically with each other

and...also act as rhythm instruments...In dialog they explore a wide stylistic range." (HR2)

"... An effortless, coherent mix that comes up with many little surprises. The biggest is perhaps this

feather-light, likeable duo itself, whose enjoyment of playing together can be heard at every moment."

(Jazzpodium)

"Wagner...loves the experimental style of playing full of percussive effects and even beatboxing." (Jazzthing)

"Pure, acoustic, intimate..." (Jazz'n'More/CH)

"...a grooving, touching album with sophisticated original compositions..."

(Gitarre und Bass)

"An unusual duo and an unusual sound. Lively music, played in bright tones, with joy in playing and creating. The album is melodically and conceptually coherent, full of virtuosity and wonderful solo parts. Great music!"

(jazz-fun.de)

„With minimal instrumentation, a flautist and a double bass player create maximum range (...) Their secret is simple and ingenious." (Bergsträßer Anzeiger)

"Artistically sophisticated and highly experimental (...) The master of keys and the master of strings are perfectly attuned to each other.

They find each other in the most virtuosic tangle of notes, weave together stretches of music, separate again with a clear conscience, whereby the connection is never broken (...) Precise - to the beat (...) Sometimes stormily swirling, sometimes like a light breeze, the compositions form into modern jazz variations, into listening experiences with a rarity value."

Stephanie Wagner - C-, Alt-, Bass-Flöte, effects, comp.

Norbert Dömling – Kontrabass, comp.

The duo "Flute 'n' Bass" with jazz flutist Stephanie Wagner and winner of the Darmstadt Music Prize 2023 Norbert Dömling, double bass, arouses curiosity - because it is an absolute rarity in jazz.

The duo's debut CD is an extraordinarily successful combination of high and low instrument, which appears unexpectedly light and transparent.

Sound and rhythm experiments and the percussive playing style on both instruments as well as the beatboxing on the flute leave no drums missing.

The variable sound of Stephanie Wagner's C, alto and bass flute and the deep, warm and earthy double bass of Norbert Dömling create wonderful contrasts, timbres and moods and surprise anew in every piece.

Firm groove, delicate timbres, free, ordered and unexpected sounds can be found in the duo's original compositions.

In this project, two generations of musicians have come together in their respective uniqueness and show what the interaction of musical creativity can mean.

"Flute 'n' Bass" make their way unerringly through their own compositions, always with fresh enthusiasm and the desire to discover and try out new things.

A duo with a rarity value and a love of experimentation.
